Job Overview

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Land (BOL), Permit Section, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Non-Hazardous Unit A is seeking to hire an Environmental Protection Engineer 1. This position performs a variety of supervised functions that provide an introduction to, and training in the engineering program for the RCRA Non-Hazardous Unit. The ideal candidate will assist higher-level engineers in reviewing and regulating activities associated with the investigation, design, construction, maintenance, and inspection of Solid Waste Management sites that dispose of non-hazardous waste.

Essential Functions

  • Receives training and guidance in performing a variety of closely supervised engineering functions pertaining to
    permit review of Solid Waste Management sites that dispose of non-hazardous waste for the Bureau of Land
    (BOL),Permit Section in accordance with regulations pertaining to Solid Waste including, but not limited to, 35 Ill.
    Adm. Code Parts 745, 807, and Parts 811-817; and, 40 CFR Parts 257, 258, and 761;
  • Receives training and guidance from higher level staff in the preparation of solid waste reports which are utilized
    as a basis for solid waste permitting issuance or denial;
  • Acquires knowledge in gathering technical information relating to solid waste permitting;
  • Gains knowledge in answering routine verbal and written inquiries from the regulated community and public as to
    the rules, regulations, and laws (State and Federal) governing the management of non-hazardous waste;
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with a bachelor's
    degree in an engineering science. Typically, the subject matter would involve the type of coursework associated with
    environmental (sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology, and air pollution specialties), civil (sanitary, hydraulic, and hydrology
    specialties), general, industrial, mechanical, chemical, public health, electronic, acoustical or aeronautical engineering or
    engineering mechanics or a closely related engineering specialty.
  • Requires no previous experience.
  • This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)
  • Prefers the ability to utilize a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft software.
