THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated senior/SME-level Marine Mechanical Engineer with experience in shipboard auxiliary systems to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC . An ideal candidate will have prior experience with design, optimization, and integration of marine auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery integration, cargo handling systems, and weight handling systems calculations and analyses, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support and documentation design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, including auxiliary systems, hydraulics, weight handling equipment, rudders, piping, pumps, valves, HVAC, and apply to applicable design and requirements.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
  • Provide leadership and coordinate review efforts for verification and validation work for auxiliary and piping systems related work efforts in the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
  • Design, develop, and evaluate operation of marine vessels, shipboard auxiliary systems, and piping; review and develop technical data packages; oversee development of machinery arrangements; conduct and oversee trade studies.
  • Review design review comments submitted by junior engineers and advise decision-makers on high-impact and critical design review considerations.
  • Provide mentorship to junior mechanical engineers related to shipboard auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery integration, cargo handling systems, and weight handling systems calculations and analyses.

Location: Primarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. Alternate telework schedules or work locations may be considered for especially qualified candidates.

Travel: Up to 10% travel for ship checks.

Physical Activity: Mostly desk/computer work; may involve visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches), or vision requirements.

Pay Range: $120,000 150,000, based on education, qualifications, and experience.

US Citizenship Required: Yes, U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at employment start.

Security Clearance Eligibility: Requires a DoD Secret security clearance. Candidates must already possess or be eligible for a Secret clearance.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelors degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline from an ABET-accredited institution; Masters preferred.
  • At least 6, preferably 15, years of experience in Mechanical Engineering; 3, preferably 10, years in design, optimization, and integration of marine auxiliary and piping systems, ship machinery, cargo handling, and weight systems.
  • Experience leading auxiliary system efforts for government or commercial shipbuilding programs preferred.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.
  • Knowledge of ABS, USN, and industry standards relating to shipboard auxiliary systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of ABS, NVR, and commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency with common productivity software.
  • Strong communication skills.
